Water Damage Restoration in Tomball, TX

Tomball is an incorporated city on the line between the Texas hills and the Gulf coastal plain. Older downtown buildings, storm-worn roofs and slow-draining yards each lead to different first steps.

For Tomball homeowners

For water damage restoration in Tomball, TX, shut off the main valve, photograph everything and start drying in the first 24 to 48 hours. Flood water is not covered by standard homeowners policies. We take requests from Tomball and Hufsmith.

Which Tomball addresses do you take requests from?

Requests for water damage restoration in Tomball, TX come from Tomball (77375 and 77377), plus PO boxes in Hufsmith (77337). A restoration provider confirms they can reach your street when they call. Tomball is an incorporated city with its own city limits, not an unincorporated community.

Wikipedia counts 12,341 residents at the 2020 Census, a small city where a leak on one street is often known to the next. Providers differ on how far north and west they drive, so confirm coverage on the call. Nearby areas have their own pages: Cypress and Hockley, Magnolia and Pinehurst, The Woodlands and Spring and Klein.

Does Tomball flood?

The sources behind this page do not document a flood history for Tomball itself, so it would be a guess to say how often or where. What they do say is that Willow Creek runs between Tomball and Klein, and that the Harris County Flood Control District sees a major flood somewhere in the county about every two years.

Wikipedia's Klein article says Willow Creek separates Tomball from Klein, and that the creeks in this part of the county are tributaries of Spring Creek and ultimately Lake Houston. It calls the Klein area susceptible to hurricanes and flooding.

Check your own address before relying on anything general. The Harris County Flood Education Mapping Tool shows floodplain information, though HCFCD says it is not the effective FEMA map. Our flood zone guide explains the zones.

Why does Tomball's slope matter for drainage?

Because the town sits on a boundary. Wikipedia says railroad engineers noticed Tomball was where the low hills of Texas meet the flat Gulf coastal plain, and that the land slopes gently toward the Galveston ports. Water here moves slowly downhill, not quickly away.

That gentle grade is an advantage for a railroad and a mixed one for a house. Rain that cannot drain fast sits against slabs and in low yards. A downspout that empties beside the foundation, or a driveway that tilts toward the garage, sends water to the same spot in every storm.

Fixing grading and gutters costs less than repeated drying. Ask the provider what moisture readings they will take and where. If water does get in from outside, it is Category 3 under the IICRC S500 standard, and our flood cleanup page explains what that means for the work.

What does Tomball's railroad and oil history say about older buildings?

It says the old core dates to the early 1900s. Wikipedia reports the area boomed in 1906 after Thomas Henry Ball persuaded the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railroad to run through downtown. The stop was first called Peck, then officially renamed Tom Ball on December 2, 1907.

Oil came next. The Tomball Oil Field discovery well was drilled on May 27, 1933, and Wikipedia says the city incorporated that same year. Humble Oil gave residents water and natural gas free of charge in exchange for drilling rights, an arrangement that lasted until 1988.

None of this tells you the age of any one house, so look up your own. Buildings from the boom years often have older pipes and framing.

  • Old supply and drain lines tend to fail at joints. See the burst pipe guide.
  • Galvanized pipe corrodes from the inside. Read galvanized pipe leaks.
  • Older commercial buildings downtown can share walls, so a leak next door may reach you.

Who lives in Tomball homes, and why does it matter after a leak?

Tomball has an older population with many people living alone, according to its 2020 Census figures. Wikipedia lists 21.5% of residents aged 65 or older and 34.0% of households made up of one person. After a leak, that changes who can move wet furniture or shut off power.

2020 Census figureTomballWhy it matters
Residents12,341A small city, so neighbors know each other
Median age40.7Many long-time owners with older systems
Aged 65 or older21.5%Lifting and drying are hard to do alone
One-person households34.0%A leak can run for hours before anyone notices
Housing units, share vacant5,448, 7.2% vacantEmpty units can leak unseen

If you live alone, give a neighbor or relative a key and show them the main shutoff. Check on older neighbors after a hard freeze or a storm.

Owners who split time elsewhere should leave the heat on in cold weather. The American Red Cross says to keep it no lower than 55 F when you are away, and to let cold water drip from faucets on exposed pipes.

Does Tomball run its own water supply?

Yes. Wikipedia says Tomball has its own water supply, and that the North Harris County Regional Water Authority taxes the city's water customers but does not provide water service there. For a leak, that suggests the city is the contact for the street side of your meter.

A burst line inside the house is your problem and your plumber's. A leak on the supplier's side of the meter is a call to the water provider.

Find the main shutoff before you need it. In a slab house it may be at the meter box or at the house.

Write down both locations and tell everyone who lives there. A shutoff nobody can find costs the first and most valuable minutes of a leak.

What do wind and storms do to Tomball roofs?

They open small gaps that leak for weeks before a stain shows. The National Weather Service says a derecho on May 16, 2024 brought a swath of winds over 100 mph through the Houston metro. It also reports that Hurricane Beryl, in July 2024, brought trees and power lines down across the area.

Those reports cover the region, not Tomball alone, but a roof in any part of it can lose shingles or flashing. The leak then travels along the decking and into the attic, and the stain appears on a ceiling a room away.

Our roof leak guide and hail and hidden leaks guide cover what to check. After any storm, look at the attic with a flashlight and look for dark, damp wood.

Photograph what you find before anyone repairs it. A dated photo of the damp decking helps an adjuster tell a storm leak from long-term wear.

Will insurance pay for a roof leak or creek water in Tomball?

A sudden roof leak or plumbing leak is usually covered, but flood is not. The Insurance Information Institute says flood is excluded from standard homeowners and renters policies, and the NAIC says ground water and rain runoff are typically not covered. FEMA says most homeowners insurance does not cover flood.

The Texas Department of Insurance says your company has 15 business days to acknowledge a claim, and 15 business days after getting what it needs to say whether it will pay. It can extend that by 45 days if it explains why.

Call your agent before you sign a work order. The insurance claims guide lists what to photograph and keep.

What should I do in the first 24 to 48 hours?

Stop the water, protect people, then start drying. The EPA says to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth, so the first two days matter most. A wet slab house gives mold very little time to take hold.

  1. Shut off the main water valve, and the power to wet areas if you can do it safely.
  2. Photograph and video everything before moving it.
  3. Call your insurer and ask what they need before work starts.
  4. Call a restoration provider and ask what they will measure and how they will document drying.
  5. Keep indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50, as the EPA recommends.

The emergency page has a longer checklist, and mold after water damage covers what to do once growth has started. Providers differ on which streets they reach, so confirm coverage when they call.

Questions people ask

Is Tomball part of the city of Houston?

No. Wikipedia says Tomball incorporated in 1933, and because of that Houston did not annex its territory. It is its own city with its own water supply, although it sits in Harris County.

Do you take requests from Hufsmith?

Yes, for PO boxes in Hufsmith (77337), as well as Tomball (77375 and 77377). The provider confirms they can reach your address when they call, since providers differ on which streets they drive to.

Who do I call for a leak on the street side of my meter?

Call the water supplier. Wikipedia says Tomball has its own water supply, so the city is the likely contact. A pipe inside the house is your plumber's job, and shutting off the house valve stops it meanwhile.

Does Willow Creek affect homes near Tomball?

Wikipedia places Willow Creek between Tomball and Klein, but it does not describe flooding there. Look up your own address on the Harris County mapping tool before assuming anything about risk.

Can wind damage cause a ceiling leak weeks later?

Yes. Lifted shingles or loose flashing let in small amounts of water that travel along decking before a stain shows. Check the attic with a flashlight after storms and photograph any damp wood before repairs.

Should an older neighbor living alone be checked after a storm?

It is a good idea. Wikipedia lists 34.0% of Tomball households as one person. A quick visit can catch a leak early, and a neighbor who knows the main shutoff can stop it before the damage spreads.
